Happy Solstice and welcome to La Posada Hotel and Gardens, or welcome back!

“Then followed that beautiful season…Summer…Filled was the air with a dreamy and magical light; and the landscape Lay as if created in all the freshness of childhood”-Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Happy Solstice and welcome to La Posada Hotel and Gardens, or welcome back! It’s the perfect time to visit the gardens, the longer days mean more bloom varieties, colors and sweet fragrances. Take note of the vibrant green hues, blue skies, and puffy clouds that only June can bring to Winslow. Remember, the grounds and gardens are places that invite one to move at a slower pace and take a closer look.

Happenings and Projects

North Strip/Natural Area:

Thanks to the gardens staff for the cleanup and dead brush removal along the North/Native Strip. Look for some new drought tolerant plants in this natural space: Sotol, Sage varieties, Agave, and Yucca varieties. Rabbitbrush, Apache Plume and Arizona Ash will be installed in the Fall when temperatures are cooler. Progress is also being made in widening the tree wells so that the bubblers are more effective, as we had damage to a few of the Ash trees due to the unseasonably warm Spring, early leafing out, and repeated freezing temperatures. We’ll be babying these trees in hopes that they recover.

Milpa/Chef’s Beds/Raised Beds:

The Milpa Garden, on the property’s West side, has been prepped and seeded. We’ve decided to limit our crops in this spot to: Amaranth, Sunflowers, Hollyhocks, Rosemary, Mint and other perennial wildflowers. The Amaranth will be harvested in the Fall and taken to Chef in the Turquoise Room to be used in one of his delicious dishes! Also, this area is in recovery from an infestation of bind weed and squash bugs and will continue to be amended.. Look for a Fall cover crop to help get some nitrogen into the soil.

Chef’s Beds

What started out as straw bale beds, the Chef’s beds have become a more permanent fixture on the NE corner of the property, across from the Museum. They were aptly named, as the kitchen staff can step out the back and harvest what they need. The warm weather crops have been planted, look for: tomatoes, peppers, squash, eggplant and cucumbers. Other favorites in this area include: Dwarf Peach, Pear, Apple, Rosemary, Onion, Chives, Garlic Chives, Lavender, Lemon balm, Peppermint, Oregano and more!

New Raised Beds

Take a stroll to the West Side of the property near the garden sheds and look for the newly installed raised beds along the base of the wall. This area has been transformed from a weedy bed into raised beds and mesquite trees. The trees will provide shade for the beds as well as fill a gap when we have to remove a dying Elm from the other side of the wall. Kalup and crew have filled these beds with squash and peppers. Look for the Asiatic Lillys too.

New Plant Identification Signs

More signage is coming in the next few weeks, featuring the Common and Scientific Names of our most prevalent flowers, trees and shrubs.
